This expedition we went to the Keys in Florida. It was really fun! It was a 16 hour car ride, so we drove for two days. It was a tiring car ride. We stopped at a campsite close to our destination, about four and a half hours away from Scout Key (the Key we we’re going to camp at). When we finally arrived, it was 12:30am. All of us were EXTREMELY tired!!!
We did a lot of cool stuff in the Keys! It was mainly focused on getting our SCUBA open-water certifications! It was a big challenge. We had hours and hours of studying and classes. Richard joined us for the first week of our expedition because he had to take the boat to SOAR’s FL base. It was an awesome time to bond with him.
We went fishing on the boat almost every day the first week. It was really fun! I caught a lot of fish. I caught a grouper, and yellow-tail. Allie also caught a yellow-tail. They were HUGE. However, I did not eat any fish that we caught because I am a “fishaterian”. In other words, I refuse to eat fish.
The last day of our expedition, which was on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012, we went to downtown Key West. We got to go to the Hemingway House, and saw his six toed cat!! I didn’t think they were real, I honestly thought he was crazy!! After that, we went to Fort Zachary Taylor. It was really cool to see! All of us enjoyed taking pictures with all of the cool stuff. When we left the Fort, we went to Mallory Square. We saw a man in chains, it was like a magic trick. It was sooo neat! After we saw that we experienced the sweet palace called Peppers! Peppers is a hot sauce store that gives free samples of hot sauce. Allie, A.C., and I were having a time trying all of the sauce. There was also a $2,000 hot sauce bottle in a glass case. It was soooo hot that if it spilt on the floor it would burn through. They’d have to call HAZMAT, which is a place that removes acidic stains/liquids. They had one man try it from some Asian game show, and with just one speck of it, he threw up. Then we went to Kermits, home of the Key Lime Pie. I bought a smoothie and a slice of pie. It was ahhhhmazing! :D
On our last day, we woke up at 4:30am to make a ONE DAY, 16 hour drive. OH MY GOSH! It was toooooo early!!! The staff were VERY grumpy! I fell back asleep in the car and woke myself up at 6:43am exactly. It was an awesome expedition though!
